Government Reopening in Sight, Markets Refocus: Key Investor Conferences to Watch Before Year-End

The longest government shutdown in U.S. history may soon be in the books. That's welcome news for Americans reliant on any number of federal programs. It's also a relief for millions who intend to travel by air to gather with family and friends for Thanksgiving, which is a mere 15 days away. Investors have reason to be grateful too, as a busy conference docket now through the holidays is likely to help clear up what has been a foggy macro backdrop, given the dearth of official data since October 1.

Mood: Miserable, Spending: Pretty Strong

Aside from lingering airport tie-ups and frustrating flight delays, angst has picked up over the state of the broader economy. Last Friday's University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment survey tallied the second-worst reading in its nearly 80-year track record.1 What's more, the expectations subindex printed a record low. Households are not happy. But, as always, it's the "watch what consumers do, not what they say" economy.

Indeed, the National Retail Federation (NRF) issued its much-anticipated winter holidays spending forecast last week, and it shows a solid 3.7% to 4.2% year-on-year jump for the November–December period.2 In fact, total spending could top $1 trillion for the first time. It wasn't an all-around cheery report, though, as average spending per person is expected to drop from $902 in 2024 to $890 this year.

AI Still Rules the Market Mindset

Retail is but one macro angle. Artificial intelligence (AI) remains the linchpin of the bull market, at least by many accounts. We saw that throughout the Q3 earnings season. Big-cap tech profits and margins were stout, while AI hyperscalers, specifically, stirred Street optimism with another fresh set of incredible capex intentions. All of it comes to a head next Wednesday afternoon when NVIDIA (NVDA) hosts what's now routinely dubbed the Super Bowl of AI—its third-quarter earnings report and conference call.

Between the consumer and AI, the bifurcation between Main Street and Silicon Valley feels wider than ever. Stuck in the middle is Wall Street. Strategists are on shaky footing as they attempt to lean on what data is on hand for their 2026 forecasts. The wise ones will pay extra attention to corporate events and conferences on tap over the weeks ahead.

All Aboard the Last Leg 2025's Conference Journey
